[»Whoever takes up the Sword …« Diary of a Chrischona Brother from the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71]
Adam Ewald (1847–1918), a Chrischona brother from Baden, describes his experiences as an unarmed stretcher bearer in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 in his recently rediscovered war diary. The Baden troops, allied with Prussia, led him and other soldier brothers from Strasbourg across the Vosges mountains to Dijon and Belfort. He describes the horrors of war unsparingly, but with empathy for the people affected – in the religious language of Pietism and Revival. Wherever he could, he evangelised among the soldiers and the population through word and writing. He saw war as punishment for human failure and part of God's plan of salvation. The diary is also an important source of military history and a testimony to the processing of war trauma on the basis of unshakeable faith.
