Understanding Peter Thiel

What connects flying cars, surveillance software, libertarianism and the Antichrist? Peter Thiel is one of Silicon Valley's most influential and controversial figures: co-founder of PayPal and Palantir, an early Facebook investor, and a prominent voice in debates about technology and political power. Yet his ideas are more often quoted than understood. In Understanding Peter Thiel, Sven Slazenger follows the connections between positions that can initially seem contradictory. Why does a champion of individual freedom invest in technologies that expand state power? Why does an advocate of radical innovation warn that technological progress could destroy civilization? And why does a technology entrepreneur turn to René Girard, Christian eschatology and the Antichrist to explain the dangers ahead? The book traces a path through Thiel's arguments about technological stagnation, elite conformity, bureaucracy, democracy and geopolitical competition. It then examines the central dilemma of his later thinking: how can societies control dangerous technologies without creating a political power that becomes dangerous itself? Neither a biography nor a defence of Thiel's politics, this essay takes his ideas seriously while testing their assumptions, contradictions and limits. It asks where his diagnoses illuminate problems others overlook - and where his proposed responses threaten the freedom he seeks to protect. Written for readers of politics, philosophy and technology, Understanding Peter Thiel explores questions that reach far beyond one Silicon Valley billionaire: what counts as progress, who has the power to shape it, and how can we remain authors of our future?
