Toxoplasmosis in Egypt

Toxoplasmosis (synonym: litter box disease) was formerly originated in wildlife species, since the discovery of Toxoplasma oocyst in 1970, Toxoplasma was known as one of the most worldwide distributed zoonotic diseases. Approximately one-third of the world¿s human population are Toxoplasma affected with more than 60 million of individuals only in USA are infected with toxoplasmosis. According to the public health importance of toxoplasmosis, some European countries implemented up-to-date surveillance systems for the legislation, notification and surveillance of toxoplasmosis.In Egypt, high seroprevalence rates were detected in different Governorates. However, toxoplasmosis is a neglected parasitic disease in Egypt with a little attention is paid for the health education of the public about the danger of it, its mode of spread, risk factors of acquiring it and methods of control.
