Towards Improving Health and Safety Practices in Construction

Construction is a dangerous and risky business. This is due to the nature of its activities and the high accident rates. The Health and Safety Act, more especially the Construction Regulations is in place to eliminate the potential hazards during design and construction phases and reduce the consequential risks thereof. However, the importance of the construction regulations seems to have been overlooked in South Africa. As a result, the number of accidents and fatalities witnessed has been rapidly increasing. Towards improving the Health and Safety practices in construction, this book investigates the causes of contractors'' non- compliance with the health and safety procedures and the subsequent effects of such non-compliance on the construction project as well as the country''s socio- economy.
