The United Nations-Regional Organizations Partnership in Peacekeeping

The establishment of African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur on 31 July 2007 marked a major breakthrough in the United Nations/ Regional Organizations collaborative efforts in security management and a timely response to the changing dynamics and complexity of 21 century conflicts. The model presents a critical and pedagogic research significance with the potential to revolutionize collective security management far beyond the dominant role hitherto played by the UN. Though a child of convenience arising from the challenges and subtle compromises during the negotiations to establish a traditional UN peacekeeping mission in Darfur, the hybrid peacekeeping model represented by UNAMID has quickly gained currency and is been looked at as a new-found template for peacekeeping operations
