The Successful Zimbabwean Women, An Education Outcome

The Successful Zimbabwean Women, An Education Outcome, is a monograph based on a PhD dissertation completed in 1996. Its objective is to expose historical blocks to women¿s progress. The research study highlights the challenging societal position of women since pre-colonial times. Laws, though with loopholes, were passed in the eighties with the intention of addressing women's plight. Primary research findings show that a sample of women in management positions are mostly married mothers, many of whom attended single sex schools, hold varying views on men¿s maternity leave and inheritance as well as express that promotion to decision making positions can be enhanced through affirmative action in the education system, formal and on- the-job training. Such research findings are not conclusive. Therefore some research recommendations include the need to promote gender based national dialogue and a pursuance of gender research, results being an improved woman status in education, decision making positions at the workplace, the economy and in governance, as well as discouraging the exploitation of retrogressive traditional cultural practices to the detriment of women¿s progress.
