The Prevalence of Violence against Children in Schools in Addis Ababa

This research was carried out with the motive of knowing the prevalence of major types of violence against children in schools, major violators and mechanism that can be implemented to minimize the problem. It attempted to investigate this in one of the 10 sub cities of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The participants of the study were students, teachers and school directors. In collecting feed backs, several tools had been used. Based on the findings of the study, the prevalence rate of violence was: physical 36.1 %, discrimination 17.5%, emotional 10.4%, neglect 37.9% and sexual 8.7 %. The study has also indicated Alternative Non-Physical Approaches implemented so as to keep school discipline that is 61.2%. Based on these, several methods of lessening the problem have been enumerated by respondents. Thus, the researcher hopes that the study revealed pictures on the existing status of violence against children in elementary schools. It also alarms those educators to think of strategies to prevent child right violence.
