The impact of warehouse receipts system

The study sought to examine the impact of warehouse receipts system in the procurement of cashewnuts under liberalized agricultural market. The central issues of concern by the study were to understand the perceptions of various stakeholders in the cashews buying chain towards the warehouse receipts system, to find out the roles of the key actors of the system, to understand how the system influences price and quality of cashews and to identify challenges facing the system. The study found out that majority of key cashew stakeholders are satisfied with the system. However, the warehouse operators were blamed by farmers and traders for the loss of weight at the time of receiving and issuing out the crop from the main godowns.Lastly, the study recommends various strategies that can be employed to address the above challenges. Such strategies include; review of the levies imposed on the crop, use of digital weighing scales when receiving and issuing the cargo, auction¿s transparency to all buyers and keeping away from political interference.
