The Challenges and Benefits of Teaching Pragmatic Competence

People communicate around the world through sending and receiving information in a specific context. Most students in EFL / ESL classrooms interact without recognizing the intended meaning, due to their cultural background and knowledge. This literature review highlights what pragmatic competence is and explores its relation to the development of language proficiency. When reading this literature review, you will see why English educators separate the pragmatic component from the development of language learning. Language learners encounter lots of challenges regarding the pragmatic knowledge. However, the complications can be solved through seven benefits discussed in the study. Practical recommendations are addressed as well.
