The Campaign Credit Financing Mechanism

Cotton plays a major role in the Malian economy. For more than half a century, the cotton industry has been one of the main sources of income for the agricultural sector as well as for the textile and agri-food industries. In spite of this dominance, it must be noted that cotton growing is not free of pitfalls, including the difficulty of setting up an efficient and effective financing system. In this context, CMDT, which is in charge of managing the sector, uses a special credit called "campaign credit". Thus, several hundred billion of our francs are mobilized per campaign. A colossal amount (275,000,000,000 FCFA according to DFC) for a single bank to support. In addition to the massive side of this credit, it is necessary to note its very complex and particular character. In addition, the ever-changing global economy is generating a lot of questions and uncertainties that are at the root of many of the upheavals and uncertainties surrounding the financing of the campaign credit in Mali. This turmoil and uncertainty is mainly linked to political decisions taken at the top of the government.
