As compared to traditional dental instruments, lasers are proved to be safe and effective tool in conventional dentistry with their precision and minimal invasive quality which makes them an attractive technology for various dental procedures. The ability of the laser to leave a clean, dry, sealed wound is the probable reason for the noted low inflammation rate following laser surgery. Lasers are of high value as ensures tissue is distorted minimally as laser is always sharp while cutting and do not contact tissue. Incision is always self sterilizing. Post operative scarring is extremely reduced. Contraindications of lasers include pregnancy, malignancy, locally injected medication, epileptic patients and children. Along with some limitations (like large cavities, cavities located between teeth, crown preparations, defective crown or filling removal etc.) high cost of laser treatment is a primary barrier in routine practice. The last 20 years have witnessed many new developments in dental technologies, and the next 20 years promise to be even richer in technologic advancements. Lasers will be in the forefront of that growth.
