Beschreibung
This book is basically an attempt to carry out a literary analysis of the representation of women in Juju music which is an important genre of popular music in Yoruba speaking area of southwestern part of Nigeria. Two juju musicians were selected for the study - Ebenezer Obey (Male) and Saint Janet (Female). The result of the analysis carried out showed that Juju musicians engage in the misrepresentation of women in order to attract listeners and subsequently boost the sales of their albums. It was found out modernity is solely responsible for misrepresentation of women in Yoruba popular music, although it contributed immensely to it. Also, it was found out that Yoruba popular musicians generally dig deep into the culture in the portrayal of women and that the songs only reinforce this cultural view about women. The book concluded that Ebenezer Obey and Saint Janet explored Yoruba performance aesthetics in their representation of female gender. The analysis of literary techniques employed by the selected Juju musicians, therefore, served the purpose of deepening our understanding of the representation of women in Yoruba popular music.
