Sustainable Transport for People with Disabilities

People with disabilities constitute a significant portion of the urban poor in developing countries, if internationally agreed targets on reducing poverty are to be reached, it is crucial that measures be taken to abolish discrimination and isolation that disabled people continue facing. In this sense, transport is an important enabler to fight poverty through enhancing access to employment, education, social services and leisure. This research has as a study case the challenging city of La Paz, Bolivia and its particular problems of public transportation which is not prepared to be accessible for people with disabilities. The barriers these people face are of all kinds including: physical, social, political and economical. However, this study will focus on urban mobility; therefore the objective is to understand the real mobility needs of all the types of disabilities.
