Sustainable Pharmaceutical Industry in India

The modern-day concept of sustainability can be credited to the United Nations and World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) headed by Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland. The commission defined sustainable development as ¿the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs¿ in their report ¿Our Common Future¿. Sustainability has been judged more keenly by the scholars working mainly in three areas viz. social, environmental and economic; although the scope is far beyond just these three aspects, it can be accepted that these three form the pillars on which sustainable development rests. The business enterprise, being a citizen of the social environment, has certain responsibilities towards this triple bottom line of sustainability. The companies are corporate citizens of the world community and thus are accountable to operating responsibly.
