Surgical Access to Midfacial Skeleton

The incisions and surgical approaches for the mid-facial skeleton have an utmost importance because of the presence of several vital structures and an important aesthetical value. For approaching directly over the skeleton, the incision should be placed very close to the area of surgical interest, retracting any major anatomical structure in the way and overall providing appropriate access. Damage to any nerve or vessels should be avoided while planning for the placement of an incision. The surgical approaches to the facial skeleton should be primarily designed for preserving the facial aesthetics, rather than the surgical convenience. The face is externally visible and any scar resulting from incisions creates cosmetic deformity; therefore, cosmetic consideration is critical in facial surgeries.
