Studies on the bioactive compounds from marine bacteria

This book is concerned with the bioactive compounds produced by marine bacteria because marine macroorganisms and microorganisms produce a dizzying array of active compounds including terpens, steroids, peptides and alkaloids, which have potent activities as anti-microbial agents. Some compounds isolated from marine macroorganisms have been shown to be of microbial origin.The search for new natural products from marine microorganisms has already shown promise with the discovery of compounds with possible use as anticancer and cardiovascular agents . With worldwide sales of 45 billion dollars, anti-infectives represent the third largest therapeutic area. Half of all marine natural products documents reported bioactivity data from marine microorganisms at the rate of approximately 700 per year over the last decade.
