Traumatic dental and maxilla-facial injuries are very common and appear worldwide to affect approximately 20-30% permanent dentition. It affect often seriously psychological, economical, functional and esthetic consequences for the individual. Sports injuries for those older than 7 years of age represent about 20% of the trauma and it could be speculated that this is the most obvious activity where preventive measures would be possible and effective in reducing the rate of oral trauma. Modern dentistry has developed many techniques and appliances to protect the athletes from variety of oro-facial injuries. In fact, the preventive sports dentistry represents the most important contribution the dental profession can make to assure sports participants welfare.
