Some main aspects in the selection of winter vetch

The biological characteristics and agronomic features of varieties of winter vetch (Vicia villosa Roth.) in the conditions of Central Northern Bulgaria have been studied. The information in this material characterizes winter vetch as a favorable forage crop, a source of forage with high energy and nutritional value. Additional information was obtained about the morphobiological variability of the quantitative signs of this crop, and the possibilities for the identification of the genotype by phenotype according to the ecological-genetic model. A comparative assessment of phenotypic variability, adaptability, and ecological stability was performed. In light of the above, it is necessary to expand the sowing of this crop while identifying the seed yield. All this implies an intensification of scientific research to develop new high-yielding varieties and organize a seed production system. Varieties of winter vetch have been identified, which can serve as a source for creating new artificial populations (varieties) adapted to growing conditions in a temperate climate.
