Aesthetic dentistry performs a service many people want, and some social benefits of an attractive smile can be empirically documented. But the value of an attractive smile should not be overestimated or oversold. The dentist's desire to do good in aesthetics should not overrule the patient's right to make clear, informed decisions. Therefore, the practicing dentist should examine the patient's motives for seeking aesthetic treatment and offer treatment only if the patient clearly indicates that he or she has aesthetic concerns. Practitioners should fully explain the advantages and disadvantages of aesthetic services and obtain informed consent for all procedures.An ideal aesthetic treatment plan should be minimally invasive, preserving as much of the natural structures as possible. It should also realign the ideal form and function of the teeth and tissues while enhancing the aesthetics and should never compromise the patient¿s oral health or the stability of his or her teeth.
