Selbständige Gemeinde – eine hilfreiche Illusion?

Dass die Ortsgemeinde in Fragen der Leitung, Lehre und Ordnung selbstständig ist, stellt die ekklesiologische Leitüberzeugung des Kongregationalismus dar. Diese Kirchenform wird im deutschsprachigen Raum vor allem mit sog. Freikirchen verbunden, die sich dezidiert als kongregational verstehen. Kongregationale Elemente finden sich allerdings auch in anderen evangelischen Kirchenformen, und gleichzeitig sind auch nicht alle Freikirchen kongregational verfasst. Das heterogene Bild verschärft Fragen, die für diese Leitvorstellung von der selbstständigen Ortsgemeinde kennzeichnend sind: Welches Bild von Gemeinde ist hier bestimmend? Wie wird Selbständigkeit in ihrem Verhältnis zur Einheit der Kirche begründet? Welche Herausforderungen stellen sich in einer spätmodernen Gesellschaft?
Der vorliegende Tagungsband versammelt Beiträge, die das Prinzip „selbständige Gemeinde“ interdisziplinär und ökumenisch unter die Lupe nehmen und mit praktisch-theologischem Fokus die unterschiedlichen Schattierungen dieses ekklesiologischen Prinzips zu erkennen geben.

[Independent congregation – a helpful illusion? Interdenominational explorations of the relationship between church and congregation with a focus on congregational free churches]
The ecclesiological guiding principle of Congregationalism is that the local church is independent in matters of leadership, doctrine, and order. In German-speaking countries, this form of church is primarily associated with so-called free churches, which explicitly identify as congregational. However, congregational elements can also be found in other forms of Protestant churches, and at the same time, not all free churches are congregational in nature. This heterogeneous picture raises questions that are characteristic of this guiding principle of the independent local congregation: What image of the congregation is decisive here? How is independence justified in its relationship to the unity of the church? What challenges arise in a late modern society?
This conference volume brings together contributions that examine the principle of the “independent congregation” from an interdisciplinary and ecumenical perspective and reveal the different nuances of this ecclesiological principle with a practical-theological focus.
