Salivary Proteomics

Proteomics is the study of the proteome, the protein complement of the genome.This field of research has acquired the name ¿Proteomics¿. ¿proteins expressed by the genome¿ have been termed ¿Proteome¿, a term firstly used in the public by Mare Wilkins at the first Siena proteomic conference in 1994.13Saliva is a very attractive body fluid for diagnosis of disease for many reasons such as collection of saliva is usually economical, safe, easy and can be performed without the help of healthcare workers it allows for home-based sampling); and it is considered an acceptable and non-invasive process by patients because it does not provoke any pain and can be easily collected for patients in the paediatric age range.14Recent proteomic platforms have analysed the human salivary proteome, characterising about 3000 differentially expressed proteins and peptides, many of them of microbiological origin.15Generally proteomics study relays on methodologies for separation and identification of protiens such 2-D electrophoresis, capillary electrophoresis and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), in combination with mass spectrometry .
