Roles of NGOs In Combating Child Labor in Malawi

This book examines the role of NGOs in combating child labour in Malawi. Active Youth Initiatives for Social Enhancement (AYISE), a local NGO, was chosen as a case study. AYISE¿s child labour prevention strategies were designed to create necessary conditions for children to be in school and not involved in child labour, empower families to have income and food, and train the youth in vocational skills to create employment within the communities. This was a qualitative study. This design was appropriate as it helped the researcher to find out people¿s views, experiences and perspectives about the different interventions that were being implemented by AYISE to reduce the practice of child labour in the impact districts. The main methods used to collect data were focus group discussions, key informant interviews and in-depth interviews. A total of 190 people participated in the study. The study therefore recommends that awareness raising and advocacy should be intensified so that many people especially parents and other key gatekeepers such as chiefs and teachers are aware about the disadvantages of child labour.
