Rhetoric through the History of Arabic Literature

Rhetoric is regarded as one of the sciences of the Arabic Tongue. It is an innovative field that makes use of scholarly research on the Arabic Language, its eloquence and its exquisite meanings. By definition, rhetoric in classical Arabic means elegance of language and the power of effect. On the other hand, rhetoricians define it as a science that studies grandiloquence. Rhetoric has played an important part in the history of Arabs and in commemoration of rhetoricians in setting examples to follow. It also has a role in elevating the status of orators and poets in respect to their rhetorical excellence. This book traces the rhetorical devices in the Arabic Language starting with the pre-Islamic period through current-day literature.
