RETRIEVAL OF SEPARATED INSTRUMENTS

In the practice of Endodontics, clinicians may encounter a variety of unwanted procedural accidents and obstacles to normally routine therapy, at almost any stage of treatment. One of these procedural problems is intracanal instrument fracture. Separated root canal instruments may include endodontic files, Gates Glidden burs, lateral or finger spreaders, and paste fillers, and they can be made from nickel-titanium (NiTi), stainless steel or carbon steel. When an instrument fractures in the root canal system a decision has to be made to leave, bypass or remove the fragment, the choice being based on an assessment of the potential benefit of removal compared with the risk of complication. The type of tooth, the root canal morphology and particularly its cross-sectional shape and diameter, the thickness of the dentin, the depth of the external root concavities, the presence of root canal curvature, and the radius and degree of the root canal curvature are among the decision-making and influencing factors in the management of fractured instruments.
