Relaying in LTE-Advanced

LTE is the newly emerging technology in the area of telecommunications. Since it does not meet the requirements for IMT-Advanced, it is not accepted as a Fourth Generation (4G) system. In order to meet the requirements, 3GPP has added enhancements into the LTE standards, which are all collected under the name LTE-Advanced or Release 10. One of these enhancements is deployment of relay nodes, which have been added to improve cell-edge user throughput and ensure coverage extension. The inband relays are the first ones to be standardized, since they are easy to implement from the current standardized protocol stack. This work defines the possible problems faced with the operation of inband relays into the network and proposes solutions on resource allocation and resource partitioning. For resource allocation, a frequency domain proportional fair scheduler is used. For resource partitioning for RNs at the DeNB, dynamic and static parti- tioning algorithms are implemented. Afterwards, their performances on achieved throughput and consumed amount of resources are tested and analyzed in the results section.
