Regional Evaluation of Groundwater Resources in Ghana

In areas underlain by hard rocks, groundwater development is confronted with considerable challenges due to limited primary porosity or insufficient permeability to yield adequate water to wells. This becomes a primary constraint to socio-economic development in many developing regions due to the difficulty encountered in developing reliable water supplies from groundwater sources. Various models have been used to evaluate the yielding potential of hard rock aquifers through the determination of aquifer water-transmission and water-storage abilities. This book employs geo-statistical approaches to analyse specific capacity to provide information on the permeability of rocks and the potential for groundwater abstraction on regional scale. Furthermore, it applies the Sacramento soil moisture-accounting hydrological model to assess the natural groundwater resource within a river catchment. The book should be very useful to researchers and groundwater development practitioners, or anyone else interested in policy formulation and regulatory development of groundwater as a natural resource.
