The disease has a considerable impact on community and animal health, as well as socioeconomic status of society especially, in agrarian countries like India, Rapid means of transport, failure to enforce import/export regulations and addition of unscreened animals to the herds are some of the major factors contributing to the spread of brucellosis. Commercially many smooth lipopolysaccharides (SLPS) based ELISA kits are available for testing brucellosis in animals and humans. These cannot detect brucellosis caused by rough strains like B. canis and B. ovis and may culminate in possible false negativity due to serological cross-reactivity. Further, biohazard risk associated with antigen production has prompted the Further, biohazard risk associated with antigen production has prompted the development of an alternative test for the simultaneous detection of both animal and human brucellosis.
