Rabies is a zoonosis of viral origin due to a neurotropic Rabdovirus that attacks some animals, especially the dog, and is transmitted by saliva in dog and cat bites. It is a compulsory slaughter and notifiable disease. All homeothermic animals are susceptible to it. Suspected wild animals must be killed to examine the brain for evidence of rabies.
