Profitability of Honey Production as a Means of Poverty Alleviation

This book examines the profitability of honey production as a means of poverty alleviation among rural households in Abia state, Nigeria. It described the socio-economic characteristics of the rural households involved in honey production, estimated the poverty status of the respondents, determined the profitability of honey production, assessed the extent of rural household involvement in honey production activities, and examined the constraints of honey production in the study area. Multi-stage sampling technique involving purposive and random sampling techniques was used to select 120 respondents. Data were collected with a questionnaire and analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics (tobit and multiple regression models). Results of research revealed that 69.2% of the respondents were males, young and active with mean age of 36.26 years, 52.5% were married, with mean household size of 4 persons and only 0.8% of them had no formal education. The mean of farm experience was 4.67years. About 56.7% of the respondents were engaged in farming as their major occupation, with mean farm size of 12.79 hives per farm.
