PROBIOTICS

Probiotics are living microorganisms that when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit for the host. Probiotics are dietary supplements and are not considered to be of the same standards as medications, but they are indicated in various infections, inflammatory & immunological ailments, and also exert beneficial effects in the oral cavity as well. Probiotic microorganisms effectively prevent and treat various diseases because they regulate general and local immunity, produce antimicrobial substances, and compete with pathogenic microorganisms. Traditionally, probiotics were developed to alter Gut microflora. As the oral cavity forms the first part of GIT, it is conceivable for probiotics to influence the oral microflora. Several studies have demonstrated that the administration of Probiotics can improve oral health and since two decades the use of probiotics has gained popularity within the dental research community with a focus on caries development, periodontal health, halitosis, and many more. Hence, this composition intents to discuss the role of various Probiotics in oral diseases.
