Beschreibung

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the second most common infections in community practice. Worldwide, about 150 million people are diagnosed with UTI each year costing the global economy in excess of 6 billion US dollars (Zakaria, 2005). It is a serious ailment in human due to the frequency, recurrence and difficulty in eradication. UTI is more common in women than in men, due to anatomic and physiological reasons (Stephan, 2003). By the virtue of its position urinogenitatract is more vulnerable to bacterial infection caused by both internal and external flora. UTI with risk include infants, pregnant women and the elderly, as well as those with indwelling catheters, diabetes and underlying urologic abnormalities (Foxman and Brown, 2003). Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) usually occurs when bacteria enters the opening of the urethra and multiply in the urinary tract. It is estimated that about 20- 30% of adult women experience UTI at least once during their life. However, its impact and frequency vary in different populations (Nakhjavani et al., 2006).
