A woman in Sub-Saharan Africa has a one in 16 chance of dying in pregnancy or childbirth. Causes of maternal deaths include; haemorrhage, infection, obstructed labour, hypertensive disorders in pregnancy and complications of unsafe abortions. Severe parasitic infections during pregnancy contribute significantly to the degree of anaemia in pregnant women. This increases the risk of increased maternal and infant mortality and morbidity. Control of parasitic infections before or during pregnancy, particularly malaria and intestinal helminths, will improve health outcomes in pregnancy for both the mother and child. This book describes the findings of a study conducted on parasite distribution in pregnant women in a district in Ghana and the effect on maternal haemoglobin levels.
