Prediction of Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is the most common medical complication of pregnancy. It is associated with maternal and neonatal adverse outcomes. Maintaining adequate blood glucose levels in GDM reduces morbidity for both mother and baby. There is a lack of uniform strategies for screening and diagnosing GDM globally. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is carbohydrate intolerance resulting in hyperglycemia with onset or first recognition during pregnancy. If untreated, perinatal morbidity and mortality may be increased. Accurate diagnosis allows appropriate treatment. Use of different tests and different criteria will influence which women are diagnosed with GDM. Metabolic adaptation during pregnancy is essential to meet the physiological demands of pregnancy as well as the adequate growth and development of the fetus. These metabolic changes are progressive and may be accentuated in women who develop gestational diabetes mellitus.
