Power Unravelled in Media Discourse

This book explores the relationship between power and media discourse. It includes a critical analysis of two interviews in terms of the discoursal tactics that indicate social power or weakness. The author focuses on discoursal strategies used in news interviews to convey power and highlights the fact that there is no one to one correspondence between a discoursal strategy and a powerful effect. Moreover, the book highlights how the same strategy may empower or weaken a speaker''s position in different contexts. This book has certain implications for media and critical discourse analysts as well as EFL teachers through familiarizing them with the intricacies of power underlying language choices to avoid potential manipulation by media networks.
