Duck rearing plays an important role in the upliftment of the socio-economic condition of the rural population of Assam. It is primarily reared for both egg and table purposes. The peculiar agro-climatic condition in Assam with marshy and waterlogged areas prevailing throughout the state provides the better environment for rearing ducks. Duck rearing provides an additional source of income to the rural women folk. Ducks are excellent converters of low quality agricultural and kitchen waste products into high quality animal protein in the form of egg and meat. Since duck eggs have high biological value they have great demand and considered to be a popular food item in Assam. The ducks have gained popularity in most parts of the world as ducks are most versatile and useful among all domesticated animals and birds. Assam is known to possess a good number of popular varieties of ducks. Duck production and rearing is found to be more profitable in Indian condition than chicken in terms of return against investment.
