This book investigates the self-representation of bishops and clerics as holders of spiritual and ascetic authority in the Latin metrical inscriptions of Italy (4th–5th centuries CE). Four main aspects of this authority are studied: firstly, the theme of salvation and resurrection; secondly, the representation of bishops as holy teachers; thirdly, the presence of Petrine rhetoric; and finally, the theme of baptism. The book concludes that metrical epigraphy was a fundamental communicative medium for the ecclesiastical élites of 4th and 5th century Italy, used with the aim of either enhancing the bishop’s legitimacy or magnifying his charisma through the celebration of his holiness.
