Pia Desideria

Vor 350 Jahren gab Philipp Jakob Spener (1635–1705), Senior der Pfarrerschaft in Frankfurt/M., in seiner Schrift »Pia Desideria oder herzliches Verlangen« einer neuen Frömmigkeit eine Stimme, die sich im Laufe der Neuzeit im lutherischen Protestantismus in weitem Maße durchsetzen sollte. Kirche solle nicht vornehmlich das Ende der Zeit vor Augen stellen, sondern eine bessere Zeit auf Erden erwarten; die Wahrheit der christlichen Botschaft lasse sich nicht dogmatisch begründen, sondern nur durch die praktische Umsetzung der biblischen Botschaft erfahren; Christ sei man nicht durch Mitgliedschaft in einer Kirche, sondern durch eine bewusste Lebensführung und in der Gemeinschaft von Brüdern und Schwestern.
Die Neuedition greift in der historischen Kommentierung erstmals umfassend auf die historisch-kritische Edition der Briefe Speners zurück.

350 years ago, Philipp Jakob Spener (1635–1705), senior pastor of the Frankfurt am Main clergy, gave voice in his work »Pia Desideria, or Heartfelt Longing for a New Piety« to a perspective that was to gain widespread acceptance within Lutheran Protestantism over the course of the modern era. The Church should not primarily focus on the end of time, but rather look forward to a better time on earth; the truth of the Christian message cannot be justified dogmatically, but can only be experienced through the practical application of the biblical message; one is not a Christian through membership of a church, but through a conscious way of life and in the fellowship of brothers and sisters.
For the first time, this new edition draws comprehensively on the historical-critical edition of Spener’s letters in its historical commentary.
