Phytochemical sorting of ethanolic extract of Piliosti stem bark

The anti-diarrheal effects of ethanolic extract of Piliostigma reticulatum bark (EEEPR) were evaluated at different doses (250; 500 and 1000 mg/kg body weight) on the number of total and diarrheal defecations induced by castor oil and on the gastrointestinal distance covered by charcoal solution in rats. The results show that EEEPR, at doses of 500 and 1000 mg/kg, lead to a 44 and 58% reduction in the number of diarrheal defecations, respectively, compared to the control group (p < 0 ,05). These values are similar to those obtained in the group of rats treated with Loperamide, a reference antidiarrheal drug. The EEEPR extracts at 500 and 1000 mg/kg show similar kinetics of action and completely inhibit diarrheal defecation during the fifth hour after administration.
