Keeping Horses The history of different breeds and ethological principles are explained, and the consequences for appropriate horse-keeping are derived from these. This includes all functional areas and behavioural requirements such as their care, movement, comfort or explorative behaviour, the mother-foal relationship and interactive behaviour in the herd. Keeping procedures with spatially oriented programmes for keeping the animals individually or in herds are presented together with practical advice on designing stables and riding facilities (planning, building permits, construction materials and construction methods). On the topic of feeding, appropriate strategies are derived from anatomical and nutritional/physiological principles, including nutritional requirements and the potential of available feed for the differing requirements of racehorses and breeding horses.
