In the manor house Kellynch Hall lives 27-year-old Anne Elliot, the middle of three daughters of the widower Sir Walter Elliot. Her older sister Elizabeth is rather cold-hearted and full of arrogance. Mary, the youngest, who lives in nearby Uppercross as the wife of the staid Charles Musgrove, is snivelling and conceited.
