Periodontal Disease and Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes

The importance of providing oral health care for pregnant women cannot be disputed. Current guidelines and data suggest that dental care during pregnancy is safe. Providing dental care for pregnant women will help remove potentially harmful bacteria from dissemination and possibly leading to other complications. As oral health care providers we can educate our patients regarding the importance of oral health and on important preventive measures to maintain oral health. There is now a need to focus on elucidating the mechanisms underlying the link between periodontal disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes to inform the development of targeted therapies and preventive strategies. COVID-19 pandemic has imposed unprecedented changes in all aspects of life and healthcare. A causal relationship between maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection and placental pathology/pregnancy outcomes is essential to direct and ensure optimal maternity care in the challenging period of a global pandemic.
