Oro Surgical Considerations In Pediatric Dentistry

Surgery performed on pediatric patients involves a number of special considerations unique to this population. Pediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery is unique among surgical specialties in that it identifies strongly with dentistry. There is a proper relationship since a thorough knowledge of dentistry is a prerequisite for a surgical specialty that deals with diseases, injuries, and defects of the oral and maxillofacial region. The management of child who must undergo oro-surgical procedure is based on (1) age and maturity, (2) past medical and dental experiences that might influence behavior, (3) physical status, and (4) the length of time and amount of manipulation necessary to accomplish the surgery.
