The annual rainfall over India is computed to be 1170 mm, which is much higher than the global average of 800 mm. However, this rainfall in India occurs during short periods of high intensity and because of such high intensity and short duration most of the rain falling on the surface tends to flow away fast leaving little scope for recharging of ground water resulting thereby lack of water in most part of the country. Rain water harvesting and conservation is need on massive scale. A water footprint is expressed in terms of a water volume per unit of product or as a water volume per unit of time. The blue water footprint refers to the volume of surface and groundwater consumed (evaporated) as a result of the production of a good. The green water footprint refers to the rainwater consumed. The grey water footprint of a product refers to the volume of freshwater that is required to assimilate the load of pollutants based on existing ambient water quality standards.
