Odontogenesis Revisited

Odontogenesis, is the process of tooth formation, eruption, and integration with its surrounding tissues. Current understanding of tooth development and the mechanisms of associated developmental disorders have been obtained based on extensive research of past decades. Epithelial-mesenchymal interaction plays an important role in orchestrating the cellular events throughout the tooth development, taking place at different point of time, enabling various cell types to carry out their precise contribution in development of teeth devoid of error. Conserved signaling pathways and transcription factors tightly helps in maintaining complex molecular regulatory network. However, the fundamental biochemical mechanisms of developmental process of teeth remain ailingly characterized. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the essential gene regulatory networks that drive the tooth developmental program for future directions in tooth development research.
