Obturating Materials

Dental pulp is regarded as the heart of the tooth, which is often infected by the dental caries resulting in pain. Sometimes swelling and pus accumulation may also occur. In these conditions, infected pulp is removed and replaced by some artificial material during Root canal therapy. These materials are popular as obturating materials, which forms the artificial heart of the tooth. Commonly used material for obturation these days are Gutta percha and various type of sealers. In endodontics, history has witnessed the use of wooden pegs and silver points in root canals. Modern advancements in obturating materials include Resilon-Epipheny system, Guttaflow etc. Variety of root canal sealers had been tried as orthograde and retrograde fillings. The search for a more compatible and ideal materials is still in progress.
