Obesity and periodontal disease

Obesity is one of the systemic conditions which influences the onset and progression of periodontal disease. Several chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, liver disease and periodontal disease are associated with obesity. This association has been hypothesized to result from chronic systemic inflammation related to obesity, affecting the susceptibility to these diseases. The hyper oxidative and a modified inflammatory state and alteration in the subgingival microbiota, in obese individuals cause higher susceptibility to bacterial infection which influences the initiation and progression of periodontal disease. The aim of this study was to estimate and compare the plasma Reactive Oxygen Metabolites (ROM), Gingival Crevicular Fluid (GCF) resist in and subgingival red complex bacteria levels in obese or overweight and normal weight subjects with and without Chronic Periodontitis and to find out the effect of non surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) on plasma reactive oxygen metabolites levels and serum resist in and gingival crevicular fluid resist in levels in obese or overweight and normal weight subjects with Chronic Periodontitis.
