Beschreibung

Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Engineering - Civil Engineering, grade: 1.1, Dresden Technical University, course: Advanced Computational and Civil Engineering Structural Studies, language: English, abstract: The Split-Hopkinson Pressure Bar experiment is one of the most commonly used tests to characterize the mechanical response of specimens under high strain rates. The theoretical basis of this experiment is based on the assumption of the one-dimensional wave theory. Dealing with this theory in an experimental or numerical way, one might observe several mistakes or variations which are often summarized as dispersions.

In this work, a numerical study on the interaction of the striker and incident bar has been done in order to analyse such a phenomenon.

The explanations with rigid body and elastic body assumptions were seen to have a major effect on the behaviour of the model. High influences of several parameters were seen to affect the shape of the incident wave. A lack of wave speed and incomparable loading time was observed as well. Negligence of Poisson¿s ratio resulted in incorrect calculation of strain values and in turn affected kinetic energy as well. The effect of frictional effects was not reflected in stress values and calls for further study in this area. Various material properties were also seen to affect variations in results.

Most of these results call for further detailed investigations. Also, results of numerical investigation of the interaction between the incident bar and specimen and the interaction between specimen and incident bar are required for proper understanding and affirmation of various effects which were caused.
