After the Nazi invasion of Eastern Europe in 1941, more than 70,000 Jews were shot in the Lithuanian forest at Ponar. Anxious to hide incriminating evidence, the S.S. enslaved a group of men -- the so-called 'burning brigade -- to exhume the bodies from the pits and incinerate them.

Trapped in unimaginable horror and guarded day and night, the prisoners used spoons to dig a tunnel to freedom. But though they escaped physically, they were tormented for decades by their experiences.
