Nephroprotection:Perspective and Relevance

Nephroprotection has been resonating for quite some times - about 4 decades - but unfortunately without any sound repercussion and major breakthrough either in its appreciation or in the field of corresponding drug development befitting with its scope in the entirety. Evidences are accumulating to demonstrate that the drugs described to be useful in various renal disorders because of their nephroprotective and nephrotonic effect as described in Unani or other traditional medicines, have even more wide and diverse therapeutic uses and can be an important source of managing many renal diseases and their complications, and of course giving a ray of hope to the millions of patients struggling to reverse or at least slow down the progression of their disease. The traditional systems of medicines can offer some novel drugs, which may be effective in different pathological conditions of the kidney. These drugs from the treasure of traditional systems of medicines can also be used to protect the renal function and delay the progression of renal damage that leads to CKD and RRT.
