Nematode-bacteria complex with biocontrol ability on pests in Nigeria

Nigerian agriculture is still traditional with great dependence on the use of chemical pesticides for pest control, despite its high toxicity on the environment, humans, farm animals and drinking water sources. This text is intended to educate Nigerian researchers on the benefit of using a more eco-friendly means of pest control which involves nematode-bacteria complexes. The nematode-bacteria complex consists of entomopathogenic nematodes with their associated bacteria symbionts. Together they kill most insect pests within 24-72 hrs making them lethal biocontrol agents. Due to their safety and ease of production, it is important for researchers in Nigeria to venture into this field in order to achieve sustainable agriculture as well as conserving the rich biodiversity in Nigeria. In an ongoing research work, the author has identified nematode-bacteria complexes elsewhere in Nigeria and is testing the efficacy on some insect pests. The results will also be published to enlighten Nigerians.
